Socrates was the hoplite who saved the life of Alcibiades at Spartolos. Just because someone grows up to be a philosopher or a playwright doesn't mean that they necessarily aren't tough. If you let kids be kids and don't try to control their natural boisterousness, they will grow up tough enough. And and the playwright, Aeschylus, fought at Marathon. In fact, they could hardly believe it so when they heard of the victory, they continued to march to Marathon to see for themselves. The "effete" Athenians defeated the Persians at Marathon without Sparta's help, which surprised the Spartans to no end. The Spartans replied that it was a bad time for them because of a religious law that forbade them fighting until a full moon, which was six days away, so they would be there next week. When Darius I invaded Greece, Athens sent word to Sparta that they were going to oppose the invaders and that they could sure use some help. Especially in the wealthy merchant class, the children led a life of relative luxury, though they were encouraged to be athletic. The Athenians, on the other hand, were more laid back. The Spartans were raised as warriors and life for a young Spartan, boy or girl, was tough indeed. We gonna need tough kids if I get a war going ![]()
